I find it sickening that this is what entertains us as a society now.
I will loudly acknowledge that it’s entertaining, especially the mystery of it all. I was locked in while it was on too. I’m not upset at the people who found this entertaining. I’m sad at how we don’t even realize that our society consuming this sort of thing as entertainment just silos us off even more than we already are.
I can’t imagine how scary it is to raise kids in a world where you can’t trust anyone, but this sort of thing being seen by millions does NOTHING but pour gasoline on that fire. We already don’t engage with our neighbors or community in the way our country did decades ago. This does nothing but make us feel right in that decision.
Of course parents should be cautious. I think you would be silly not to be. But I truly don’t believe the world is more evil today than it was 100 years ago. We just see everything atrocious that happens in every corner of the world now when we didn’t 100 years ago.
When something vile happened 100 years ago it was a big deal to that local community, but it wasn’t a national story. There weren’t hundreds of social media videos talking about it. There wasn’t a documentary made that spent 2 hours talking about it. It happened & it rocked that community, but the rest of the world never knew about it. And the world was probably better off for it.
The more stories like this we become exposed to, the more we don’t trust those around us. Even those close to us. We may not even realize that trust breaking down, but it happens whether we like it or not. And how couldn’t it? We are constantly inundated with every bad thing happening in the world. Turn on the news and every story is something awful. Turn on Netflix and every documentary is some horrible true crime story.
We are exposed to more horrific stories annually (maybe even weekly) than people 100 years were exposed to over their entire lifetimes. And it’s not because there is way more evil in the world.
Sure, technology has allowed for awful things to happen. But maybe the most awful one of all is broadcasting to the world every awful thing that happens in every nook and cranny of the world.
It’s causing our society to crumble whether we like it or not.
