Aaron's Thoughts
First Marvel movie I have actually enjoyed in quite some time. A breath of fresh air.
A few thoughts:
1. These stories are so much better when rooted in reality (and no, I’m not talking about Brave New World). The space slop of the last MCU phase (think Quantumania, The Marvels, Love & Thunder) is just so hard to get right & have the audience connect to. The return to NYC here just feels right.
2. Marvel is incredibly lucky to have Florence Pugh. She carries so much of the weight of this film & has the gravitas needed to pull it off. It’s one of the first times I truly felt like we have a real connection to a non-OG avengers character. Lewis Pullman is also excellent in this.
3. Love the tonal shift of this film, especially the change of pace from the typical MCU third act structure. Had some serious weight to it. Felt like group therapy in the best way possible. Much prefer these stories be rooted in real world issues than just “Battle giant CGI monster or evil man”. I get they are still comic book movies at the end of the day, but I think a bit of both are necessary for these films to have a lasting place in the culture.
Never in a million years expected to like this as much as I did. Great time at the movies!
