I enjoyed this a great deal more than I ever thought I would. Plays adapted into films so often feel stale & uninspired for the big screen. Not to mention they can drag quite a bit. Thankfully, Malcom Washington infuses this one with some serious craft & new perspective.
Of course, it helps that this play is naturally more cinematic than others. But you’ve got to give Washington credit for making the choices he did - they so easily could have gone poorly. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s got such an incredible cast. I know many see John David’s performance as a bit much, but his energy is honestly what drew me into the story from the very beginning. Deadwyler is a given to steal a few scenes from any film & Sam Jackson is always a treat, but Ray Fisher was the big surprise to me.
Excited to see what Malcom does next!
