I’ve got to give the Netflix algorithm credit for this one. I originally logged in to watch Tina Fey’s new “Four Seasons” series, but when then the algorithm served me up the original film from 1981 I became intrigued (mainly because I didn’t even know it existed).
Turns out the algorithm really does know me because I adored this. It’s the perfect talky, character driven hang out movie that are often my favorites. The kind with a real point of view & things to say. Just enough narrative to keep you invested in the story but not so much that you never get a chance to sit with the characters & learn their ins & outs. Serious but just funny enough to keep a healthy balance. A tried and true “they don’t make em’ like they used to” classic.
I’ve been a fan of Alan Alda since his run on “The West Wing”, but had no idea he wrote and directed as well. It’s actually quite funny that his last prominent role came in “Marriage Story” because this whole film feels like something Baumbach would have watched growing up & drew inspiration from as a filmmaker.
What a joy to discover this little gem & honestly what a great idea for a film - portraying the different seasons of both marriage & friendship throughout the actual change of four seasons. All with characters you care about, love hanging out with, and even feel connected to. Pure cinema magic!
