A joyous time at the movies. Everything I want in a summer blockbuster and so much more! Anne Hathaway, dinosaurs, and a deeply dark take on 80s nostalgia. What more could you want?
The original Jurassic Park was before my time, so this is the first time I have ever seen a thrilling dinosaur movie in theaters. I’m not talking about the terrible Jurassic Park reboot slop we’ve become used to. I’m talking about the kind of dinosaur movie where you are squirming in your seat & tense while still smiling the whole time. I’m not sure if it’s crazier that you have a whole generation (like me) that has only experienced crappy dinosaur movies in theaters or that this instantly becomes the second best dinosaur movie of all time.
As fun as the dinosaur stuff is (and trust me, it’s fun), I think my favorite part about it is that it’s still a David Robert Mitchell movie above all. It’s a deeply human story infused with the level of craft and style we now expect from him as a filmmaker. While it’s got a heck of a lot on its mind, it doesn’t sacrifice the thrilling ride by having those ideas recited at you by the characters. And boy is it a mean movie when you start to cut deeper than just the surface of the film (and what a breath of fresh air that is!)
Purchased my David Robert Mitchell season tickets on my way out of the theater.
