While it’s the least effective Sarnoski film to date, there is no denying it still has its moments thanks in large part to the always wonderful Jackman. The juxtaposition between the brutality of the first thirty minutes and the quietness of the remaining ninety is something Sarnoski feels particularly suited to put on screen. I think I’m just surprised to see how far he takes that in the first half with the brutality. I knew he had a slow mediation on legacy and regret in him, but didn’t know he had an arrow piercing through a child’s head or ‘The Northman’ level production design and cinematography in his bag.
While the first half is why most people show up to a movie with Robin Hood in the title, the second half is why I love movies in general. I just wish that it was a bit more subtle and nuanced in how Sarnoski brings the themes of the film to life.
Maybe it will take rewatch for it to fully click, but even if it doesn’t there is enough here to confidently say that Sarnoski is 3/3 and firmly in the camp as one of the most exciting young voices in Hollywood.
