I enjoyed Milly Alcock as Supergirl, but the movie itself is just utterly dreadful. No excuse for it to feel so formulaic and shallow. Even characters like Lobo that should feel exciting just made me roll my eyes. Felt almost nothing the whole movie except frustration with the screenplay and creative choices made. There are a few intended emotional moments towards the end of the film that made me chuckle thinking how they thought that the audience would be moved by what they were seeing.
I’m not the first person to mention it (and won’t be the last either), but it must be said. How the heck did Craig Gillespie get this directing gig in 2026? I’m not one to get up in arms about that normally, but that’s downright pathetic. I’m not sure if it would have mattered with the brain dead screenplay, but it didn’t help satisfy my anger towards the creatives involved. It felt like the movie was constantly trying to undermine the titular character any chance it got. And that’s probably more on the screenplay than the direction, but the choice for Gillespie to be behind the camera isn’t helping there.
The one silver lining aside from Alcock is the reminder that David Corenswet was born to play Superman. He makes it look so effortless and natural that it still blows me away. Pretty rough when the best two minutes of the Supergirl movie are when Superman pops in for a quick conversation. They will never do this, but I’m dying for them to make a grounded movie in this universe. The dialogue scenes in the apartment were by far the most successful moment of this film & the ‘Superman’ movie from last year. Just give me a domestic drama with Corenswet, Brosnahan, and Alcock all in one room for a weekend hashing things out as these characters. One can dream :)
