I think that Queer has some serious flaws & doesn’t really work. Yet, I can’t deny that when I closed my eyes that night, all I saw were images that Luca had seared into my mind.
That is a rare thing in general, but even more so in a society that consumes more content than we know what to do with.
It is stunning to look at it. Craig is remarkable. The 1950s Mexico aesthetic and recreation in the first hour were A+.
I just couldn’t shake how it felt like such a slog to get through after the first act, the lack of chemistry between Craig & Starkey, and the off putting surrealism in the 2nd and 3rd acts. I never connected with anyone in the film on any level or felt anything at all (which seems problematic given the central theme of the story).
Maybe if it was from another filmmaker I wouldn’t be so bothered by it, but I’ve never walked out of a Luca movie feeling nothing at all.
Guess there is a first time for everything.
Couldn’t help but echo this line from another review, “Queer is a film so obsessed with drawing you into this detached and isolated feeling world, that it forgets the audience needs something to actually latch onto.”
