Taking a once lost conversation between a writer and a photographer & turning it into a movie is a remarkably artistic act. One generation of artists bringing to life the artistic process and acts of a previous generation is conceptually fascinating.
Walked in ready for some classic slow cinema. To be reminded of the beauty of every day, whether big or small. To be touched by the artistic process. Yet, Peter Hujar’s Day doesn’t result in a fascinating nor provoking film in any way. It leans into the gimmick far too much & lost me as a result. There was almost too much respect for the original transcript that it doesn’t justify being a narrative feature.
Hall and Wishaw are fantastic. There is a moment between them dancing that makes you realize how great this could have been had it decided to be more cinematic.
