There was a heated discussion on Twitter earlier this week regarding how to best watch through the entire filmography of a director. Some were advocating to start with their most accessible film. Others were advocating for starting with their first film. Some were vouching for starting with their latest film. And there were even some advocating to start with their “masterpiece” or best film.
After watching Kicking & Screaming, I think the answer is unequivocally to start with the first film a director made. You so easily get the whole Baumbach experience in an hour and half. Sure, he’s still working out his kinks as a filmmaker, but you get the full picture of his style and what topics are interesting to him.
