Really impressive debut from Harris. I love a movie where you walk away feeling like the director imprinted their vision for the film onto you. Her voice is so singular that you get the feeling no one else could have brought the film to life in the way that she did.
You can feel the influences throughout, but she’s constantly infusing her own sense of style that you never feel suffocated by them. Particularly loved the flashback sequence and how its shot. Reminded me a lot of the monkey sequence from ‘Nope’.
Also got to shoutout the creative choice to wait towards the end to reveal Sterling K Browns face. His voice is so demanding and menacing that the choice is incredibly effective, even though you know almost instantly who the actor is. Speaking of actors, I was unfamiliar with Kara Young, but loved everything she brought to her character. Oh and that church scene made me laugh more than I was expecting!
I hope Aleshea Harris decides to keep making movies because I’m seated for whatever she does next.
