Aaron's Thoughts
This one really bummed me out. Love what Mimi Cave did with “Fresh” a few years ago & was really excited to see her follow up to that, especially given the cast attached.
I’m honestly not even sure where to begin in pointing out want went wrong. Seems like a film that just got caught up in rewrite hell.
It spends so long trying to convince you of different directions the film could go that it forgets to actually build out a world or explore the depths of the characters on screen. There are some really interesting things to explore, but the film just presents them and then doesn’t acknowledge them again. Like why is Rachel Sennott’s character in the film for legitimately 30 seconds? Why are we told that Delgado is on the run from the law only to never acknowledge it again? Why is the movie even set in Holland, MI? Why is everyone talking like they are in a simulation?
By the time the film is done head faking you out on where it will go, & it finally shows where it is going, the movie is over! I guess it’s supposed to play as some twist, but there isn’t an ounce of good will even left from the audience at that point.
I appreciate the ambition, I guess? But it’s so awful that I had trouble even typing that. The whole thing just makes me mad. Mimi’s next film will be pivotal in her future as a filmmaker.
