Aaron's Thoughts
When you hear that the film is essentially a Wizard of Oz parody but instead of wanting to go home to Kansas, Dorthy wants to have sex with the wizard to enact revenge on her boyfriend, you probably have an idea it’s a silly movie. But even that framing won’t prepare you for just how silly it indeed is.
I will say though, if you lean into the silliness & get on its wavelength, it’s actually more enjoyable than I was anticipating! It opens with a mailman narrating the film, so it’s not like David Wain is trying to fool anyone into thinking this is high art, which I appreciate. Once the story moves along, I laughed far more than I expected. And while some gags work better than others, the ones that worked REALLY stuck the landing (even a few days later I find myself laughing at “I’m going to make you sick” iykyk). The cameos throughout are fun & often enough to keep you on your toes. And enough of the performances are in lock step with the tone and fit will in the craziness of a David Wain film.
Once again worth pointing out that it is VERY silly movie, but still a fun ride if you can turn yourself over to it!
As an aside, here I am yet again demanding that Hollywood cast Zoey Deutch in every movie.
