Aaron's Thoughts

Nothing quite like an August surprise at the movies! A film that wasn’t even on my radar until a few weeks ago, turns out to be one of the best rom-coms of the decade!!

It has all the trappings of the genre we know and love, but brings them into the modern era in brilliant ways. It locates and brings to life the anxieties of putting yourself out there in a world where it feels like your every move is being analyzed and talked about by the broader world. Few movies up to this point have understood & depicted how society doesn’t talk about or get excited by things like the news anymore. Instead, we just constantly talk about other people talking. Which may be all good and fun when you are partaking in the chatter, but not so much when you are the center of it (brought to life in by an inventive scene where Owen is surrounded by all the people talking about him online).

And the whole thing is held together by two of the sweetest performances you will see on screen this year from Spike Fern & Angourie Rice. They had me smiling ear to ear the whole time.

Can’t wait to see what Alicia MacDonald does next!
