Aaron's Thoughts
I really love how sincere this is. Just couldn’t help but feel as though the movie falls short due to not being able to fully flesh out Ellis’ being torn between home and her new home. Instead it has to rely on outside forces to shape her decisions & doing so makes her come across as much more shallow than the film intends her to be. It makes sense that this was adapted from a novel because that inner dialogue and decision analysis is really missing from the film. Not sure the filmmaker had much of a choice though as a cheesy interior monologue probably doesn’t make it any better. Just feel like there had to be a better way to flesh out what she was actually feeling and vocalize that a little more.
Especially that last decision to come back to America. You don’t uproot your life and leave your country because some old lady was mean to you. Even if that is just the catalyst, not the reason, the movie doesn’t give you enough to think otherwise because she is really starting to get into the groove of living there.
Anyways, very sweet but flawed film. 4 stars for the part before she goes back to Ireland & 3 stars for everything after she goes back to Ireland.
