There are few things more frustrating in Hollywood than a director getting in their own way to ruin a movie.
On paper everything about this should have been great. A script with interesting ideas and a unique structure. A cast full of reliable actors (Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoe Deutch, & Dylan O’Brien). A few up & coming actors sprinkled in (Phoebe Dynevor, Daryl McCormack, & Mckenna Grace).
Yet…. you could only watch a few minutes to know that it looks cheaply made & the director is more interested in trying to show the audience how he can move the camera than he is interested in telling the story at hand. The excellent cast can only do so much to elevate above the shoddy direction.
I genuinely feel like if you made this movie 10 times it would have been decent 6 times, excellent, 2 times, a masterpiece 1 time (probably Alex Garland directed), and a clunker 1 time. Massive bummer we got the clunker 😕
This will get an obnoxious amount of clicks on Netflix in a decade when everyone goes “How have I never heard of this with such a great cast” as they are scrolling.
