I keep thinking about why I didn’t enjoy this Statham revenge thriller near as much as “The Beekeeper” from last year.
I think it ultimately comes down to the sentimentality in this one. So much of the film is built around the background of Statham’s character & his relationship with his daughter. Layer on the human trafficking element & you can easily see how much of the film centers around who he is fighting & why he is fighting.
I’m usually all for fully fleshed out characters & I totally understand the filmmakers use it to feel like the stakes are raised, but I actually think these films work better when we don’t know so much. After all, we are only really there for the actual fighting anyways, not much more.
